Netflix Announces Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath Documentary: Prince of Darkness

Netflix has officially announced a new original documentary that promises to dive deep into the chaotic, controversial, and legendary legacy of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath. Titled Prince of Darkness, the documentary will trace the origins of heavy metal’s godfathers from the grimy streets of Birmingham to the blood-soaked stadiums of global stardom. Fans and music historians alike are already calling it one of the most anticipated music documentaries in years.

This announcement comes just weeks after the band’s final performance, turning a farewell into a grand tribute. With decades of explosive history, Prince of Darkness will not only celebrate the birth of a genre but unravel the personal demons, backstage drama, and unfiltered humanity behind one of music’s most mythologized acts. Ozzy Osbourne, the man once banned from cities and blamed for corrupting youth, is now being canonized through the medium of film.

Netflix promises never-before-seen footage, raw interview clips, archival tour content, and unreleased audio that captures the raw intensity of Sabbath’s early days. Expect gritty Super 8 footage of a young Ozzy walking through Birmingham’s post-industrial streets, jam sessions with Tony Iommi before fame arrived, and powerful confessionals that peel back decades of mystique. This isn’t just a story about music. It’s a story about survival, transformation, and cultural revolution.

What sets Prince of Darkness apart from previous Sabbath and Ozzy documentaries is its intimate approach. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund, known for his gritty music biopics and stylized music videos, the documentary is said to blend cinéma vérité with the surrealism that defines Ozzy’s public persona. We’ll see the rise, fall, and rise again—from Sabbath’s formation in 1968 to the drug-fueled haze of the ’70s, Ozzy’s shocking departure, his solo success, and the band’s eventual reunion.

There will also be focus on the band’s cultural impact—how Black Sabbath became a rallying cry for the working class, the disillusioned, the strange, and the silenced. Their music was loud not just in volume, but in message, addressing war, paranoia, addiction, and the shadow side of society. And Ozzy, with his tortured charisma and unpredictable energy, became the reluctant prophet of that movement.

The documentary is expected to feature testimonials from musical legends influenced by the band. From James Hetfield to Corey Taylor, from Dave Grohl to Post Malone, the reach of Sabbath’s darkness is generational. Artists will recount the first time they heard Paranoid, how Ozzy changed their lives, and why Black Sabbath was more than music—it was mythology in motion.

In addition to band history, Prince of Darkness will offer a closer look at Ozzy’s personal life. His decades-long battle with addiction, his deep love for wife Sharon, his brushes with death, and his oddball charisma will be centerpieces of the narrative. This is Ozzy the legend—but also Ozzy the human. The father. The fighter. The fragile soul behind the bat-biting headlines.

Fans are already buzzing about potential footage of Sabbath’s earliest rehearsals, wildest tours, and private conversations long thought lost. With Netflix’s recent success with music documentaries like Miss Americana and The Dirt, expectations are high—and with a subject like Ozzy Osbourne, anything less than outrageous would be untrue to form.

On July 5, 2025, Netflix made the official announcement through a fiery teaser trailer featuring flashes of vintage concert chaos, press conference meltdowns, and a closing shot of Ozzy whispering, “They called me crazy… but they still listened.” The announcement trended globally within hours, with hashtags like #PrinceOfDarknessNetflix and #LongLiveOzzy dominating timelines.

Though no official release date has been set, insiders report that the documentary will hit the platform by late fall, likely in time for the 2025 awards circuit. Given its scope and subject matter, many believe Prince of Darkness could be Netflix’s next Emmy contender, and possibly its loudest, darkest project to date. Fans are already preparing for group watch parties, tribute streams, and deep dives into Sabbath’s legendary discography.

Ozzy himself released a statement shortly after the announcement, saying simply, “I never thought I’d live this long, let alone get a bloody documentary. But here we are. Turn it up.” The world may never get another band like Black Sabbath or another figure like Ozzy, but with this documentary, new generations will understand why they mattered—and why they still do.

Prince of Darkness won’t just be about a band. It’ll be about noise that became history, chaos that turned into culture, and a man who screamed into the abyss—and somehow, the world screamed back.
