Wondering why Max got two penalties for seemingly the same incident? We have the explainer for you

Max Verstappen received two penalties for seemingly the same incident during a recent Grand Prix, sparking debate and confusion among fans. Here’s a breakdown of the events and why the race stewards issued two separate penalties, even though it may have appeared to be a single issue.

1. The Incident: Exceeding Track Limits Twice

During the race, Verstappen was observed exceeding track limits in quick succession in two different instances. The first occurrence happened when he went wide and gained an advantage by rejoining the track ahead of his competitor. Soon after, Verstappen once again exceeded track limits in a way that affected his position relative to other drivers.

Although both instances involved track limits, they were separate actions under the race regulations. Stewards treat each breach independently, which is why Verstappen faced multiple penalties.

2. How the FIA Handles Track Limit Violations

The FIA’s guidelines on track limits are strict, especially when a driver gains an advantage by leaving the track. Exceeding track limits on its own can trigger warnings, but the issue becomes a penalty if it impacts positions or provides a competitive edge. In Verstappen’s case, each violation fit this criterion, as both incidents allowed him to retain or improve his track position in ways the FIA deemed unfair.

3. Penalties Applied: Explained Separately

The two penalties came from the following conditions:

First Penalty: Verstappen’s initial violation led to a 5-second penalty, intended to neutralize the advantage he gained by leaving the track. This penalty is standard when a driver does not immediately yield the position gained.

Second Penalty: The second violation, which happened shortly after, drew a similar 5-second penalty. Despite being the same type of infraction, each incident had its own impact on the race. Hence, they were ruled separately, resulting in two independent penalties.

4. Consistency in Rulings

The decision to impose two penalties also reflects the FIA’s commitment to consistency. By ruling each incident independently, stewards reinforce that multiple violations will be handled cumulatively, ensuring that drivers don’t habitually exceed track limits to gain positions without significant consequence.

Takeaway

While it may seem like Verstappen was punished twice for the same behavior, each incident was treated as a standalone action that impacted the race in real time.
