Ahead of the 2024 Rule 5 Draft, the Philadelphia Phillies made significant moves to protect some of their top prospects by adding Mick Abel, Jean Cabrera, and Moisés Chace to their 40-man roster. These moves reflect the team’s commitment to strengthening its future while also safeguarding its young talent from potential poaching by other teams.
Mick Abel, one of the Phillies’ most highly regarded pitching prospects, was a logical inclusion. The 22-year-old right-hander, selected in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft, has continued to show promise with a fastball that can reach the upper 90s and a developing arsenal of secondary pitches. Abel spent most of the 2023 season with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, posting a solid ERA and continuing to refine his control. Given his high ceiling and the team’s need for starting pitching depth, the Phillies opted to protect him from being selected in the Rule 5 Draft.
Jean Cabrera, a 20-year-old pitcher in the Phillies’ system, has generated buzz with his dynamic arm. Cabrera, who spent most of the year with Single-A Clearwater, has shown an intriguing combination of strikeouts and potential, though he’s still developing command. Despite his youth, the Phillies clearly see Cabrera as someone who could make an impact down the line, making him another important piece to safeguard from Rule 5 Draft risk.
