The Golden State Warriors are reportedly eyeing a potential trade for former Boston Celtics leader, Marcus Smart, in a move that could provide the team with another crucial weapon for their championship aspirations. Smart, who was the 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, has long been known for his tenacious defense, playmaking ability, and leadership on the court. These qualities make him an intriguing target for a Warriors team that has been seeking to bolster their roster following some early playoff exits in recent years.
Smart’s defensive prowess would immediately fill a need for the Warriors, who have relied heavily on their offensive firepower led by Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. While the Warriors are known for their perimeter shooting and fast-paced offense, their defense has sometimes been a weak link. Smart’s ability to guard multiple positions, disrupt passing lanes, and provide energy on the defensive end would complement the Warriors’ existing lineup, especially when it comes to matching up with the elite perimeter scorers in the Western Conference.
Moreover, Smart’s playmaking and basketball IQ would fit seamlessly with Golden State’s ball movement system. His capacity to run the offense, facilitate, and make key decisions would ease the burden on Curry, who often carries much of the playmaking responsibility. With Smart in the fold, the Warriors would have another capable ball handler to create offense, giving them more depth and versatility.
While there is speculation that the Warriors could offer a combination of young assets or future picks in exchange for Smart, the deal would need to be financially feasible under the salary cap. If this trade were to materialize, it could significantly enhance Golden State’s chances of contending for another title.
