Brent Monson to become Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive coordinator

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are set to hire Brent Monson as their new defensive coordinator, as reported by TSN’s Farhan Lalji. Monson, a Hamilton native, brings a wealth of experience to the role.

He spent 14 seasons with the Calgary Stampeders, starting in 2010 as a strength and conditioning coach before serving in various coaching roles, including linebackers, defensive line, and running backs. He became Calgary’s defensive coordinator in 2019 and held the position until the end of the 2024 season. During his tenure, Monson contributed to two Grey Cup victories in 2014 and 2018.

The Tiger-Cats’ decision to hire Monson follows a challenging 2024 season in which they failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2017. This move is part of their effort to rebuild and strengthen their defense under head coach Scott Milanovich.

Earlier in the off-season, it looked like Monson had reached a deal with the Toronto Argonauts to become their defensive coordinator but things fell apart due to a “contractual snag,” according to Lalji.

Until the fall, Monson had been with the Calgary Stampeders organization for 15 years, including spending the last six as defensive coordinator. However, the team parted ways with Monson and assistant head coach Mark Kilam at the end of the 2024 season. Kilam later signed on to become the Edmonton Elks’ head coach.

Monson also previously served as the Stamps’ linebackers coach, defensive line coach, running backs coach and strength and conditioning coach during his tenure.

Calgary finished with the worst record in the league last season at 5-12. Monson’s new team, the Tiger-Cats, went 7-11 and allowed the most points in the league last season (577).
