Michigan Technological University’s (MTU) Dean, Dr. Kellie Raffaelli, has announced upcoming changes to the New Student Orientation program for Summer 2025, aimed at enhancing the transition experience for incoming students. As part of MTU’s ongoing efforts to improve student engagement and success, the revised orientation will introduce several innovative components designed to foster a more inclusive, interactive, and personalized experience.
Dr. Raffaelli highlighted that the updated orientation will be more closely aligned with MTU’s core values of academic excellence, diversity, and community involvement. The new format will emphasize the integration of academic advising, student wellness, and community-building activities to ensure that incoming students are not only prepared for their studies but are also equipped with the tools and resources necessary for personal growth and success. This approach is expected to help students feel more connected to the campus and to one another, which is critical in building a strong foundation for their college journey.
A key change in the orientation will be the introduction of mentorship programs, where incoming students will be paired with upperclassmen who can offer guidance, support, and advice. This peer connection is aimed at helping students navigate the challenges of college life, from academics to social integration. Additionally, the orientation will include more hands-on, experiential learning opportunities, allowing students to engage directly with faculty, staff, and campus resources.
The goal of these changes is to create a seamless transition for students, ensuring they feel both academically challenged and socially supported as they embark on their educational journey at Michigan Tech. Dr. Raffaelli expressed enthusiasm for the future of the program and is confident that the updates will contribute significantly to student retention and overall success.
