As we prepare for Summer 2025, significant changes are coming to New Student Orientation (NSO) to enhance the student experience, promote inclusivity, and provide a stronger foundation for success. These updates reflect both feedback from students and evolving best practices in higher education.
One of the major changes is the shift to a more personalized, modular orientation format. Instead of a one-size-fits-all schedule, incoming students will now be able to tailor their orientation experience based on their academic interests, extracurricular goals, and personal preferences. This flexibility will allow new students to engage with programming that aligns with their individual needs, whether they’re focused on building academic skills, connecting with student organizations, or exploring career resources.
The introduction of hybrid options will also improve accessibility for all students. While the core of the orientation experience will remain in-person to foster community-building, online modules and virtual sessions will be available for those unable to attend all activities on campus. This change ensures that students who may have scheduling conflicts or other challenges can still engage with the material and meet their peers.
In response to growing demand for inclusivity, the NSO will feature additional support for first-generation, international, and transfer students. Special sessions will be designed to address the unique challenges these groups face, including navigating academic expectations, adjusting to campus life, and finding a sense of belonging. Peer mentorship programs will also be expanded, allowing upperclassmen to offer guidance and advice tailored to each student’s background.
Finally, a stronger emphasis will be placed on mental health and wellness, with workshops and resources dedicated to helping students manage stress, build resilience, and access campus support services.
These changes aim to create a more inclusive, flexible, and supportive orientation experience, setting students up for success in their first year and beyond.
