Phillies-Astros trade bringing 2-time All-Star to Philly may ‘come to fruition’

The Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros are reportedly discussing a trade that would send two-time All-Star reliever Ryan Pressly to Philadelphia. Pressly, who served as the Astros’ primary closer from 2021 to 2023, was moved to a setup role in 2024 following the signing of Josh Hader.

In exchange, the Phillies are considering offering third baseman Alec Bohm. Bohm, who earned his first All-Star selection in 2024, had a strong start to the season but experienced a decline in performance after a mid-season hand injury. Despite this, his projected salary of $8.1 million for 2025 makes him an attractive option for teams seeking infield talent.

The potential trade addresses needs for both teams. The Phillies are looking to strengthen their bullpen after the departures of relievers Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez to free agency. Pressly, with his experience and previous success as a closer, could provide the stability they seek.

For the Astros, the possible loss of third baseman Alex Bregman in free agency has created a void at the hot corner. Acquiring Bohm could fill this gap, offering a cost-effective solution with potential for future development.

While discussions are ongoing, no official agreement has been reached. Both teams are carefully evaluating the potential impact of this trade on their respective rosters. The outcome will depend on whether the Phillies and Astros can align on the value and terms of the exchange.
